A story where corporation oligarchy rules the world. You can choose:
- A. live in peace as Mr. Nobody.
- B. go down for all times in a blaze of glory.
Well it's half of the story. The actual choices are:
- A. live like a rat under corporation oligarchy.
- B. become a mob against the corporation oligarchy.
Let's take a look at the background story. It's an oligarchy emerged from the doom of 20th centry democracy, a reverse Polybius' cycle.
According to Polybius, democracy shall finally throw over oligarchy. Being the deepest nightmare of the democracy, this quite explains why the cyberpunk oligarchy fiction become so popular among the current society. It also happens to explain why the public tolerates and even instead craves mob violance.
In actual Polybius' cycle, at the doom of democracy, when the public taking freedom and rule for granted, instead of guarding for these value, they start to resent welath and inequality, which is exactly the case of cyberpunk 2077. Under such circumstance the public became easily manipulated by narcissistic demagogue playing upon these feelings (well well well who are we talking about), and eventually there will be mob rule (what happended on January 6 2021?), until a monarch emerges.
This, is a story following exactly this line. It encourage the player to use the most acceptable weapon, mob violance, to fight against their worst nightmare, oligarchy, by creating a new monarch, a glorious king of night city. Well they actually let you choose other options like living like a rat, escaping like a rat, or killing yourself.
Rome once followed this path. It was the pulic that wanted a Caesar.
